Long Dark Days

I've been experiencing a noticible flattening of my faculties. I don't believe I've ever been the deepest of thinkers, but I seem to be spending more and more time at the shallow end of the pool, so to speak. In a rut, on a plateau, stuck in neutral, something like that. I haven't been writing- songs or otherwise- and it's bothering me. I'm on the search for some intuitive source of inspiration, a return of (to) my muse, and I hope I can keep it together until I get back on track.

Here's the latest song I've written of any note. It mostly feels good to me, but doesn't seem to resonate with the neighbor drunks. I'll let it hold my spot while I'm off on vacation next week.

Long Dark Days

By the light I see the season’s changin
North wind kickin away the haze
Winter seems more than passing strange when
The mockingbird’s mad caliope plays

I listen for the words I can’t remember
I feel for the notes that I can’t play
I wonder if the best of me’s left in December
I wonder if I’m gonna make it ‘til May

And the long dark days, dark days of Summer
All the vampires hate those long dark days
Hidin from the sun all through the summer
Hidin from the sun and those long dark days

I make my mark when the moonshine’s showin
When the tide’s turnin hard from phase to phase
I got a little spark and I got it growin
‘Til there ain’t enough night to hold the blaze

If I ever done somethin I can’t remember
If I ever said somethin I can’t say
I just burn the night down to its dying ember
And live to live down another dark day

And the long dark days, dark days of Summer
All the vampires hate those long dark days
Hidin from the sun all through the summer
Hidin from the sun and those long dark days

Don’t leave now the party’s just beginning
That straight and narrow road is a twisted maze
Hold on to your seat if the room is spinning
Blame the Devil’s friend for your wasted ways

Forget about the things you can’t remember
Revel while the night around you plays
Sweet havoc from June to the end of September
And damn the dawn’s unrelenting rays

And the long dark days, dark days of Summer
All the vampires hate those long dark days
Hidin from the sun all through the summer
Hidin from the sun and those long dark days

Peace.
